The virtual
reality of MMORPG currencies
Norrath's one happening place. On a global scale, its economy
ranks right between Russia's and Bulgaria's; not bad for a place
that's positively medieval. But you won't find Norrath on the map
of Eastern Europe -- or Eastern anywhere, for that matter. That's
because Norrath is the make-believe world of two massively
multiplayer online roleplaying games (MMORPGs) named EverQuest and
EverQuest 2. As such, it exists only in a few dozen servers and in
the minds of millions of players. Its basic currency units are no
more than binary strings in an electronic universe. Nonetheless,
like the currencies of other popular games such as World of Warcraft and Star Wars Galaxies, EverQuest currency has become so
precious to online gamers that it's taken on real-world value.

What you should know about MMORPG economies
All our best fantasies reflect some aspect of reality, and
nowhere is this truer than in MMORPGs: these games can be
distressingly real, especially when it comes to survival. The best
ones, like World of Warcraft (WoW), EverQuest (EQ) and Star Wars
Galaxies (SWG), don't just give you what you need when you need it,
unlike most computer games. Since there ain't no such thing as a
free lunch, whether you're playing in the futuristic Star Wars
universe or in the fantasy worlds of WoW or EverQuest, you'll have
to get out there and hustle.
Virtual moolah for virtual
people
Unlike most real-world examples, MMORPG economies aren't hard to
follow. In Star Wars Galaxies, the standard currency unit is the
Imperial credit. That's basically all there is to it for Star Wars
Galaxies, although prices can be calculated in fractional credits
(that is, one-tenth, one-half, etc.). The monetary structure used
in EverQuest is just a bit more complicated: 100 copper = 1 silver,
100 silver = 1 gold, and 100 gold = 1 platinum. Bright, shiny gold
is also at the center of World of Warcraft's economy, where again 1
gold = 100 silver = 10,000 copper.
Real, schmeal
How do you get rich in a virtual world? Generally by creating
things for sale (crafting), by killing things, and by going on
adventures (quests, deliveries or destroy missions, depending on
your MMORPG of choice). Then again, for any popular MMORPG like
Star Wars Galaxies, the EverQuests, and World of Warcraft, you can
also buy currency from real-world sources. That's right: you spend
dollars (or Euros or pesos or rubles) to purchase game currency on
eBay or elsewhere on the Internet. At a half-dollar per thousand
for EQ platinum, 17 cents each for EQ2 gold, a dime per WoW gold,
or $4.40 per million SWG credits, game currency is worth more than
many real-world currencies. There are even web sites that
track the fluctuating values of virtual currencies, just as other
sites track real currency markets.
Credit Card, please
So here's the
new reality of online gaming: if you don't care to work for the
currencies needed to advance in many MMORPGs, you can purchase them
on the Web. The reaction to this unprecedented collision of virtual
and real-world value has been mixed. Most players accept the
practice, though some believe it's basically cheating. Blizzard,
the company that created and operates the World of Warcraft MMORPG, actively discourages
the buying of WoW gold, especially if the company thinks the gold
has been illicitly "farmed." In fact, some World of Warcraft
players have lost their accounts because they innocently purchased
tainted gold. In contrast, Sony, which operates both Star Wars Galaxies and the
EverQuest games, encourages
currency trading on their Station Exchange site. Whether anyone
likes it or not, the reality is that SWG credits, EQ gold and
platinum, WoW gold, Final Fantasy gils, and several other virtual
currencies are now real enough that they have created their own
economy, where virtual money is traded just as actively as dollars
and yen.
